Pranayam has a simple and haunting story that will make you involved in the film without boring a moment. The story may seems to be such one you saw in many other films. But what makes difference in Pranayam is that how the director treated this basic plot and story. Only Blessy can treat these type of stories in a mesmerising way. Hats off to Blessy for the great attempt and its success. The film begins with the central character Grace(Jayaprada) happends to see his previous husband Achutha Menon(Anupam Kher) in her flat. Achutha Menon comes to the flat where his son(Anoop Menon) lives. Grace is living in the same flat with his husband Mathews(Mohanlal) and their daughter( Dhanya Mary Varghese). Grace meets A.Menon again, this time with the consent of her husband. But his son don't like this and ask A.Menon to go back to his native home. Knowing this, the three protagonists planning for a journey. What happens next in the life of three is the crux of the movie. The movie ends with a never expected climax which is touching and beautiful.
The movie revolves around the three main characters. Unlike other films, All other characters in this film has something to perform with their roles. Jayaprada is the heart of the film, the whole film revolves around her character. No doubt to say that, it his her career best role till date. She is top-notch and comes with excellent performance to make the movie a feeling saga. Anupam Kher is exceptional in making his simple role to a fresh one. He makes the role of Achutha Menon an extraordinary with the expressions and feelings given to the character. Mohanlal as Mathews just stole the show. In the first half, he is only appears at sometimes, but when he is there, he took the movie to another level. In the last portions of the movie and in the climax, it is not Mohanlal, but Mathews makes the film to its top level. The character played by him is a clear reply to one of the upcoming (?) star in Mollywood who recently criticized big M's for selecting the roles. Anoop Menon also comes with a good performance. He is improved with each film and will surely has a good future. In the last scenes, his performance is fabulous.
Why there is no Malayalam film made with the name Pranayam ? All of us surprised to know this fact when the project is firstly announced. From then on, there are so many hypes and expectations cames around this movie. The reasons are many as we know it is from Director Blessy who has some good films like Kaazhcha, Thanmathra and Bramaram in his credit. More than that Pranayam has three great actors of Indian Cinema- Mohanlal, Anupam Kher and Jayaprada doing the central roles. Also it is said that the film has a different love story to portray.
At last, Pranayam is released today with an above average opening all across the Kerala. The film hit the theaters as a Ramzan- Onam Release in 2011. Just after the release of the film when the First Show ended, many fans of the star( who actually don't care about these type of movies) and viewers would like to know the result of Pranayam and its rating and verdict. Blessy, you know he is the disciple of great Padmarajan who is the maker of the most romantic film in Malayalam Thoovanathumbikal. What you expect from him is rightly delivered in Pranayam. In other words, you can say that Pranayam is a modern version of Thoovanathumbikal. Many others tried to come with a movie like Thoovanathumbikal and failed miserably. Comparison is not a good idea for these two movies. But what makes me to say this is the Blessy packaging of Pranayam. While watching the movie, sometimes I forget that I am watching a movie. You may so much involved in the film and its main characters. This is enough to describe the direction of Blessy and his right casting. We can't suppose any other actors in the roles of the main protagonists. The script from the director is excellent without which the film is a mere wash. Some of the dialogues in the film is right from the heart and makes you feel like you are in love. The songs of the movie are rightly apt to the story and also good to listen. ONV Kurup- M.Jayachandran- Blessy combination for the first time gives Malayalees a couple of good songs. The cinematography and editing of Pranayam needs to be appreciated. In every other aspects, the film succeeds in its outing.
